pretending your organizational culture is okay doesn’t make it true.

People bring their values and experiences to work. We bring our personalities, joys, and biases along with our skills and expertise. To pretend otherwise is to deny an important business reality.

That means work environments are not neutral spaces; they mirror the larger cultural structures, shifts and conflicts we experience as a society. Leaders are faced with a choice to examine and evolve their company culture or maintain the status quo.

Many times it feels safer to leaders to let things ride…until an incident turns culture into a crisis. Here’s the thing: inaction doesn’t mean that everything stays the same. It means you’re not the driver of the change, so the inevitable pivots will be be reactive and unnecessarily painful.

The good news is that organizational culture is measurable and manageable. By taking power dynamics into account, Liminal Spaces will help you figure out where you stand, build a custom plan that works for you, and support you to make changes stick.

Good news: there’s more than one way to get there.

Assess.

Chances are that unless you’ve been intentionally attending to your organizational culture, it has drifted since the values statement was drafted and new folks joined your team. Take an honest look at how staff and partners experience your operations and culture, including what’s working as well as how it could look different.

Plan.

After you know where you stand, you’ll need to set priorities, map your strategies, review your policies, and determine an accountability structure for the plan. We provide the tools, processes, experience, and counsel to build a strategy that’s realistic and attainable while avoiding a perfunctory “checkbox” approach.

Follow Through.

Culture change isn’t linear. Under stress, we all fall back on the old ways and behaviors to which we’ve become accustomed. We offer coaching and real-time technical assistance — 1:1 or in groups - to practice new ways of thinking, receive honest feedback, and test out ideas in lower-risk situations that are aligned with your vision for a new culture.
